Searching for Citizen Scientists!

Oklahoma State Parks wants to know if your school is currently participating in any of the following citizen science projects. If so please email your name, school, City, and phone number to Tom Creider <Tom.Creider@OklaTourism.gov> .  The wildlife department is looking for opportunities to film citizen scientists working some of the following research programs:

Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) invites schools to participate in the annual Winter Bird Survey. Encourage your students to be part of this exciting citizen research project by installing a bird feeder outside your classroom and counting the feathered customers who visit the feeder.

In December 2009, the Department of Wildlife will post the dates when the bird counts are to occur (usually the second week of January). This information and the survey form will be available on this agency’s website in December. (www.wildlifedepartment.com/amateurbiologists.htm)

Hummingbird and Bluebird Surveys

Other opportunities for student participation in wildlife research are the annual Hummingbird Survey

(April – November) and the Bluebird Nestbox Survey (Feb.15 – Nov. 30). Check the ODWC website for details.

In addition to the ODWC programs, they are also interested in reporting about citizen researchers in these programs as well:

Great Backyard Bird Count (Cornell Lab & Audubon)

Project Feeder Watch (Cornell Univ.)

Christmas Bird Count (Audubon Society)

BirdSleuth (Cornell Univ.)

Monarch Watch (University of Kansas)

Journey North (University of Minnesota))
