The National Association of Biology Teachers is proud to name Benton Shriver as the recipient of the 2013 Biology Educator Leadership Scholarship (BELS). The BELS program was established to support early career teachers and active members of NABT who want to further their education in the life sciences or life science education. Benton is the model of a BELS recipient. A member of NABT (and OSTA) since the beginning of his career, Benton is a biology teacher, Science Club sponsor, and Science Olympiad coach at Putnam City High School in Oklahoma City. He also attends the University of Central Oklahoma, where he is working on his Masters Degree in Education.
“I enjoy pushing myself to come up with hands-on projects in which students can be engaged. I think I get just as bored as the students do with more traditional classroom activities like lecture and worksheets,” said Benton. “I like to inspire an interest in science and nature by immersing students in them and letting them discover the concepts on their own. Students will be engaged and learn best if they are directly involved in real science projects that gets their hands a little dirty.”
Benton will be officially recognized during the NABT Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.
We congratulate Benton Shriver on being named the 2013 BELS Recipient and wish him the best as he continues his educational pursuits.
